In his article, the well-known philologist, poet and translator who for many years had been friends with Vyacheslav Vsevolodovich Ivanov, limited himself to some memories of their relationship. Believing that Ivanov’s well acknowledged contribution to science does not require any further specific evaluation, the author rather focuses on various episodes of the story of their friendship. This also gives the idea of the atmosphere in which true scholars in the Soviet Union defended their rights for free scientific creation, and how Ivanov could make an oasis of freedom and independence not only for himself but also for colleagues associated with him.
