Abstract
The author examines the rapidly developing branch of cultural history. Despite the fact that it uses methods and approaches borrowed from other disciplines, it cannot be characterized as a sphere of interdisciplinary research. It is rather an autonomous subdiscipline. Its unity is achieved by several factors. In particular this is achieved through research optics, involving the consideration of any objects through the prism of culture (symbols and practices).
